OK dudes and dudettes! Seems we have a fix for the ATI square shadows issue. HUGE thanks to maplewich  and lillzy  for pointing me in the right direction.

For those of you who are confident that you can do this yourself, the solution is here.

For those of you who are not confident with editing game files yourselves, I have created the fix and am going to share it here with you.So here it is:

Same but bigger in case that is not clear enough :)

It fixes most shadow issues, though some weirdness will remain. This is normal. Not every shadow in the game will be nice and smooth but any pixellation you see will be much much less.

Go to this location and replace the GraphicsRules.sgr file with the one you downloaded:

32-bit Windows

%programfiles%\Electronic Arts\<<Sims 3 folder or latest EP/SP folder if installed>>\Game\Bin\GraphicsRules.sgr

64-bit Windows

THIS IS A FIX FOR ATI GRAPHICS CARDS AND PCs/WINDOWS LAPTOPS ONLY! IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT GRAPHICS CARD THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!!! IF YOU HAVE A MAC THIS IS NOT FOR YOU, EITHER!!!

This file has been tested and is base game compatible. It should work with all game configurations. Please let me know if you experience any issues and I will do my best to help you.

As always, make sure you make a backup of your original file and of your save games before installing this. You will need to restore the original file when you install a new EP or SP SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP!

I have also tested this with 3booter and FPSlimiter and it works. The people on the Sims 3 BBS experiencing problems with the fix were missing part of the coding. My version of the fix has no such issues and runs perfectly fine with both 3booter and FPSlimiter installed.

Theoretically this should work for a fully-patched basegame, right? If that's the case I will give it a try with mine since I won't cry if I stuff something up.

Theoretically, yes.

Please do try it. Just make a backup of your file and if anything goes wrong, you can restore the back and everything should hopefully go back to normal.

Worked like a charm on a fully-patched basegame-only setup :D

FANTASTIC!!! You are a wonderful woman for testing this for me. I shall now release it into the wild, ie. post it on a couple of websites :)

YOU are a wonderful woman for making it super easy to fix! I had no idea those stupid shadows were the fault of the ATI card or that it was even fixable. I can also test it on my base-WA-HELS-Amb setup but I see no reason it won't work ^_^

Aw, shucks!

Please do test it on the other set-up although I agree that there is no reason why it should not work.

Just wanted to thank you for posting this and your prior thread. I would have floundered around for several more months with ugly shadows if it weren't for you. <3

I still can't figure out why the hell there were stupid winky smileys on the bbs anyway, it's not like there was a semicolon there.

No problem :) It's been bothering me for a long time and since there is a fairly easy fix for it I figured we might as well all benefit.

I've got at ATI card and I never noticed a problem with the shadows before, but then I'm not very observant! I had a look at the thread you linked and it looks really complicated, thanks for posting this to make it easier for us :)

I've added pictures. You may not have noticed an issue if your graphics card has high anti aliasing settings. Increasing the anti aliasing settings is the other fix for the square shadows and it could be that yours is OK natively.

Damn your awesome! I stopped noticing this problem on my game a while back, though I'm quite sure it's still a problem - I just became immune to it amd don't take pictures of my sims outside often. So HUGE thanks from me for this fix!

I'm super happy that it's useful. And working! And thank you :)

Thank you so so much! Fantastic, and will make playing more fun now that I won't have to stare at pixelshadows with a SON I AM DISAPPOINT face :)
